The Tāmaki Nui-a-Rua Schools Kapa Haka Festival is an annual celebration of culture, language, and community, proudly led by Tamai Nicholson from Te Wānanga o Tāmaki Nui-a-Rua with support from Tararua REAP’s Caroline Gyde and Tiaki Churchouse.
Each year, the festival brings together around 14 schools, along with local kōhanga reo and early childhood centres, showcasing the talent and pride of more than 700 tamariki. Their performances highlight the strength of kapa haka in our rohe, while also honouring the beauty of te reo Māori as part of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week).
The festival is open to the whole community, with a gold coin entry for those attending in person. A livestream is also available, so whānau and supporters near and far can join in the celebrations.
The festival is not only a platform for tamariki to express themselves through waiata, haka, and performance, but also a chance for our wider community to come together in the spirit of kotahitanga, to celebrate identity, and to strengthen the place of te reo Māori for future generations.
